I can use strategies to infer the meaning of unfamiliar words
Watch the video to see Miss Gutteridge use different strategies to work out the meaning of new words.
Which of these techniques would you use the most?
•Re-reading a sentence – does how it is being used help you identify the meaning?
•Reading on – is there more information that helps you understand what it could mean?
•Discuss unfamiliar words with others - thinking about where you might have heard it before, does it sound familiar etc.
•Studying the word – is there a hidden word in there that might give you a clue to its meaning e.g. poker, if you spot poke does this give you a clue as to what this could be/be used for.
•Use the pictures, diagrams and other information on the page.
