Enquiry
Our enquiry question for this term is:
How do we see ourselves and others?
Our Enquiry lessons this term will be driven by Art and RE. We want children to understand the different ways that artists (Joseph Wright, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Da Vinci) can express how they see themselves and others. We will be looking at their pieces of art to study techniques and also to gain inspiration to create self-portraits of ourselves in different methods and formats.
We will begin our journey as artists by experimenting with different grades of pencils to show different tones and textures. We will start to introduce the importance of light and dark and its effective use. By looking at Da Vinci’s work, we will develop and apply our understanding of proportion. Children will then look at a modern-day career that an artist could have when we find out about Manga artists. These lessons also help us to make intentional use of shading.
Once the children have a good foundation in terms of technical skills, we will start to look at the work of our two focus artists. While studying Joseph Wright. the children will apply their learning of light, dark and proportions to create realistic images. In contrast to this, when they look at Basquiat’s work, they will be encouraged to express their emotions without being constrained by trying to produce a realistic image. They will learn about complimentary and contrasting colours to help their abstract works make an impact.
Throughout the term, we will also engage with our enquiry question through the lens of RE allowing children to make links between the leaders and significant figures in the Abrahamic religions. What impact do their teachings have on the way that followers of that religion view themselves?
