At Beeston Fields, we place high importance on developing our indoor and outdoor learning environments. Our unit is zoned so that each individual area has a clear and purposeful focus for learning which is carefully mapped to our curriculum.
Take a look inside....
Our home corner is a central part of our classrooms - there is always a 'buzz' of quality discussion and social interactions as children re-enact their experiences from home. In the background, you'll see our giant Learning Journey display which documents the children's progress in their half-termly enquiry lessons.
Within all our learning zones, there are opportunities for reading and writing. Here is an example of an opportunity for reading and revisiting taught content - the children use the phone book to call their chosen person and role play a discussion with them, recalling key taught content.
Our creative area is every young artists' dream come true! Children will have endless fun making and designing in this zone. It is equipped with a self-service paint station, easel, tools for cuttings, folding, stapling, hole-punching, fringing, linking and much more. Our displays support the children to improve their creations and advance their skill levels throughout the year.
Our discovery area is filled with opportunities to investigate various scientific and geographical concepts from light, life cycles, minibeasts, body parts, plants and more! In the summer term, children care for and grow their own butterflies, before releasing them into the big wide world. The children enjoy writing and drawing each observable stage of its lifecycle!
Our construction, small world and writing areas promote a wealth of communication and language development opportunities. Children enjoy working collaboratively on projects and pursue imaginary adventures together using the range of open-ended resources on offer.
The sensory area provides children with the opportunity to explore the properties of dry sand. It also offers a stimulating invitation for role play ranging from using the diggers on a construction site to building desert animal habitats!
Our young mathematicians enjoy developing their concept of number, shape, space, measure and pattern in this carefully-planned zone. Through our daily maths taught sessions, children become fluent in the basic skills of math and therefore enjoy exploring the concepts and games on offer in this zone ('snakes and ladders' is a favourite!).
Our cosy corner is perfect for snuggling up with a book. We have a wide range of high quality texts - both fiction and non-fiction - and adults work hard to promote a love of reading for pleasure.
Children's progress in writing and mathematics is captured in their books. Our literacy units last 3 weeks and children produce a 'Bees Knees' task at the end to showcase the new writing skills learnt.
Children benefit from high quality adult interactions and a conscious effort to develop a positive sense of themselves, respect for others, social skills, emotional well-being and a positive disposition to learning.
Opportunities to teach children how to healthy are built in throughout our curriculum.
Our outdoor area is designed to be an extension of indoor provision - it allows children to develop different skills, often those which are bigger and louder! Being outdoors is a key part of our early years offer and outdoor learning is valued just as highly as indoors.
We have a focus on 'loose parts' so there are no limits to children's play and imagination. Here the children chose to build Mae Jemison's space rocket after learning about her being the first black American woman to go to space.
Our expressive arts zones allow children to explore a range of instruments and environmental sounds. They enjoy putting on performances for their friends and re-enacting the stories they have read.
Physical development is at the heart of our outdoor provision; all our resources are open-ended so have multiple uses. Children enjoy moving, lifting and transforming the loose parts to create different play scenarios. Here they made boats while singing their own version of "row row row your boat" together.
